Cheapest oil change – do it yourself!

Auto vehicle experts and professionals recommend that you change your car engine oil after every 3 months or 4000 miles, whichever comes first. Changing the engine oil is a simple job that often you can do by yourself. Here are basic instructions on to replace oil (note: please consult with professional mechanic if you’re not sure how to do this; for the correct type of oil and filter to be used please consult with your vehicle manual):

1. Begin with gathering the necessary equipment needed for the job. Such will include a new oil filter, a canister of a new motor oil, an empty container to capture the used oil, and some protective clothing.

2. Now locate the oil drain plug found on the bottom of the car below the engine. Position the empty container under the oil pan and open the plug and drain the used up oil.

3. Next, locate the oil filter in the bonnet of your car. Open it by twisting anti-clockwise. Remove any rubber seal and pour any oils within the filter into the empty container. Wrap the used filter and set it aside.

4. Proceed to open the new oil and moisten the gasket at the upper part of the new filter.

5. Insert the new filter by turning it gently in a 3/4 clockwise direction.

6. Use a dry cloth to dry the opening of the oil drain plug, then replace it and fasten tightly.

7. Use a funnel to add fresh oil through the oil filler hole. After adding about 3/4 of it, stop and replace the filler cap.

8. Turn on the engine and let it run for 1 minute.

9. Turn off the engine and give it up to 15 minutes for the new oil to settle.

10. Use the dipstick under the hood to check the level of the oil.

11. Keep adding the oil slowly, while checking its level as you add, until it reaches “Full” mark.

12. Pull out the container that you used to collect old oil from under the car and to your ride for a test-drive around the block.

13. Stop and check the oil for the last time and if it reads “Full” then you are good to go.

Take the previously used oil and filter to your nearest oil-recycling facility.

Tips for spring car maintenance

Spring car maintenance is very important, especially for those that live in the north. Many people that live up north do not take the same care with their cars during the icy cold winter months. As the weather warms in the spring, it is a great time to catch up on car maintenance.

The first spring car maintenance tip is to wash your car thoroughly. For those that live in snow country a full winter of collecting road salt can be damaging to your vehicle. Most of us run our cars through a car wash during the winter but they do not get all of the salt off the car. Make sure you wash your car from front to rear and top to bottom getting every nook and cranny. While you are washing your car this is a good time to open the hood and check all of your fluid levels, this chore is easy to neglect when it is cold outside.

The next spring car maintenance tip is to check the air in your tires. As the temperatures rise, you will need to let air out of your tires just as you had to add air as the temperatures cooled going into winter. Properly inflated tires increase fuel mileage and increase the lifespan of the tires. While we are speaking about tires, springtime is a great time to have your tires balanced and rotated.

Another spring car maintenance tip is to change the oil or have it changed. If you have someone else do the oil change ask them to check the condition of your brakes and rotors while they are changing the oil. This the perfect time of the year to install a new set of windshield wipers also, this will get you prepared to drive through spring rainstorms. The last tip may take two people, this is a good time to check all of your lights. Make sure no bulbs burned out over the winter by checking headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and all of the other lights on your car.
